The Story Behind the Theatre
Named after the phrase meaning “tumultuous uproar”—a nod to the playful pandemonium of an audience bursting into applause—Hurly-Burly welcomes guests into a world of seaside splendor inspired by historic, turn-of-the-century theatres.
According to Imagineering lore, the space was originally home to the BoardWalk’s most celebrated vaudeville performers. In its heyday, resident headliner Polly Delmar anchored a roster of ocean-themed acts delivering nightly maritime melodramas. When the tide turned and the theatre closed, performers left behind their personal effects in hopes of a future encore.
Nearly a century later, those doors are opening once again. Restored throughout the venue are preserved costumes, old show programs, tickets, and telegrams detailing the venue’s rich narrative history:
- Pearl, a Playful Puppet: Perched on a shelf, Pearl belonged to veteran ventriloquist Mother Muriel’s act (Mother Muriel and the Illustrious Pearl). When Muriel retired to her seaside cottage, she left Pearl behind to keep a watchful eye on her proteges.
- The Magician Showcase Mystery: A backstage sign-in sheet dated Saturday, September 14, 1940, shows only one performer signed in for the showcase: Prospero.
- Dressing Room Drama: Notes pinned to the backstage bulletin board reveal the bitter yet friendly struggles between Polly Delmar and the Siren Sisters over sharing dressing room space.

Architecture & Interior Design
Walt Disney Imagineering reimagined the interior to bring guests closer to the stage, raising the floor to create a seamless single level paired with tiered seating for optimal sightlines. The color palette expands upon the BoardWalk’s coastal theme, blending rich jewel tones and teals with contrasting coral accents. Brass accents on frames, handles, and lighting fixtures give the venue a refined, period-appropriate look, while the refreshed exterior façade beautifully anchors the location along the promenade.
Key Design Highlights
- The Stage & Lighting: Red theatre curtains frame exposed brickwork behind a full band setup. A star-projected ceiling over the stage creates an immediate after-dark ambience, complemented by gold-accented arched niches and ornate chandeliers in intimate alcove seating.
- Seating & Finishes: Guest seating features a blend of powder-blue tub chairs paired with white marble-top tables, dark upholstered booth seating along the perimeter walls, and mixed occasional chairs.
- Historical Display Details: The venue’s backstory unfolds chronologically along the walls. Real props depicted in classic show posters—including a moon, a triton, and a pearl—have been preserved and mounted on shelves alongside a vintage gramophone.

Hurly-Burly transitions seamlessly between family programming during the day and an elevated nightlife experience for adults:
