The Madrigal Family in Disney's "Encanto"

Disney’s ‘Encanto’ Features the Best Elements of Classic Disney Tales. We had the pleasure of attending the early press event for Disney’s Encanto and I just gotta say, you will be blown away by the intricately woven storyline that features all the best elements of Classic Disney tales. From the complicated relationship between upholding family values and struggling with self-discovery, to music that will have us singing the same songs over and over again, Encanto has it ALL! We can’t share too much about the film with you, but for those worried about Disney losing its magic touch in theaters, this will be a welcome change!

During the event, Co-Director Byron Howard shared that the story really started after the production crew took a deeper look into the make up of their own families and how they could apply that to the story of Encanto. Howard shared with the press, “Right away we began to talk about what was the most important to us. And what do we all have in common? Family was what we had in common. No matter the size or the shape, everybody, all of us, we all have a family.

He continued, “It became an exciting challenge for us. How do you tell a story with a large family? In other words, a lot, a lot, you’ll see, a lot of characters and with each one with a personality, dimensions and unique qualities.” For those who do not know, Disney’s Encanto features protagonist Mirabel, with a working ensemble cast of 12 core characters! Each and every character had to have their own motivations, stories, and one challenge the team faced was how to tell the story of the entire Madrigal family, not just Mirabel’s. A brilliant way to do that? Through song and dance.

Famed Hamilton and Moana composer Lin-Manuel Miranda signed on to the project and from what we have heard we fully expect the Encanto soundtrack to quickly hit #1 on the charts. Disney’s Encanto currently stars Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, Diane Guererro as Isabela, Jessica Darrow as Luisa, Carolina Gaitán as Tia Pepa, Mauro Castillo as Tio Félix, Adassa as Dolores, Rhenzy Feliz as Camilo, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers as Antonio , with John Leguizamo as Bruno.

The film will also fit into Disney’s inclusivity initiative with Director Howard sharing, “Encanto” is a celebration of diversity in more ways than one. We thought with an ensemble cast, what a great opportunity to show this family and how they have succeeded with their differences being so important. Everyone fulfills a purpose in this family and that’s one of the beautiful things you discover in the film.”
