Live-Action ‘Tangled’ Put on Indefinite Hold

Dreams of seeing Rapunzel’s golden locks cascade across the big screen in live-action have been temporarily snipped. According to sources, Disney has put its planned live-action adaptation of the beloved 2010 animated hit, “Tangled,” on hold indefinitely.

The project, which was in active development, had garnered significant buzz with Michael Gracey, the director behind the musical spectacle “The Greatest Showman,” attached to helm the film. Adding to the anticipation was Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her work on “Thor: Love and Thunder,” who was penning the script.

However, the studio has reportedly pressed pause on the fairytale adaptation. While Disney has not officially commented on the decision, the timing coincides with the less-than-stellar box office performance of their recent live-action offering, “Snow White.” The film, despite significant anticipation, has so far grossed a tepid $69 million domestically and $145 million worldwide, potentially causing the Mouse House to re-evaluate its strategy for bringing animated classics to live-action.

The future of the live-action “Tangled” remains uncertain. While the project is currently on hold, there is no definitive word on whether Disney might revisit the idea down the line. Fans who have long awaited a live-action take on the charming story of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider will undoubtedly be disappointed by the news.

Despite this setback, Disney is not abandoning its strategy of mining its rich animated library. The studio has two other live-action adaptations on the horizon. “Lilo and Stitch” is slated to arrive on May 23rd, followed by “Moana” on July 10th, 2026.

Interestingly, “Moana” benefits from a recent surge in popularity, fueled by the blockbuster success of its animated sequel, “Moana 2,” which captivated audiences last November. Meanwhile, the appetite for “Lilo and Stitch” appears to be strong, evidenced by the viral success of its Super Bowl spot featuring Stitch and the impressive viewership numbers for its March trailer.

The original “Tangled” was a resounding success for Disney, earning nearly $600 million worldwide during its 2010-2011 release. The film, which offered a fresh and humorous take on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, also garnered critical acclaim, boasting an impressive 89% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an Oscar nomination for its original song.

Whether the magic of “Tangled” will eventually be reimagined in live-action remains to be seen. For now, Disney appears to be taking a more cautious approach to its animated adaptations, focusing on titles with more immediate momentum and proven audience enthusiasm. Fans will have to wait and see if Rapunzel will ever let down her golden hair in live-action form!
