Disney Cruise Line Reveals Plans for New Island Destination in the Bahamas

Disney Cruise Line Lighthouse Point

Ready for your Disney Cruise yet? If the answer is no, you may want to take a look at plans recently unveiled at the D23 Expo for a second destination in the Bahamas known as Lighthouse Point. The location is on an island called Eleuthera and Disney plans to celebrate the culture and natural environment of the area by keeping things Bahamian.

An Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan must be accepted by the Bahamian government before any construction can begin. The hope is that plans will be accepted in 2020 with final completion occurring in 2022 or 2023. Disney Cruise Line is committed to developing no more than 20 percent of the land they acquire while using sustainable building practices and having environmental monitoring programs in place as they build. The focus will truly be on retaining the integrity of the land itself. Plans also include donating at least 190 acres of their private property to the Bahamian government.

The Disney Cruise Line has employed Joe Rohde, a Walt Disney Imagineer who is known for his work in Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Aulani Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii, to explore Bahamian culture and come up with a design that celebrates the tradition and culture of the islands. He has spent time exploring the arts and cultural sites of the islands in an attempt to capture their unique feel. He is working alongside Bahamian artists Kevin Cooper and Antonius Roberts to create a tropical paradise that is true to its roots at Lighthouse Point. Watch him explain how he was inspired in this project down below.

The Disney Conservation Fund has been a supporter of marine life and conservation for many years, providing over $13 million around the world (including the Bahamas!) to sustain our ocean life. They have specifically been working to rehabilitate and protect the coral reefs in the Bahamas since 2007, and plan to continue leading those initiatives in the coming years.

This tropical paradise will celebrate its heritage and inspire visitors with its beauty. Whether you’ve been on a Disney Cruise before or not, it sounds like the time has come to set sail! Lighthouse Point, here we come!
