School is back in session all across Central Florida, and Walt Disney World Resort cast members are finding ways to support teachers with donations of funds and school supplies. A recently-organized Back-to-School Drive supporting A Gift for Teaching collected more than 40,000 essential school supplies and raised more than $17,000. Wow! And all of it goes to support teachers in local communities.

Maureen, a leader of the merchandise team at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, was previously an elementary school teacher and principal. She says “The best part about being a cast member is the privilege to help others. When you think about it, it’s very similar to teaching. It’s always a joy to assist our guests – especially our young guests – when they share they are school supply-shopping at our resort. I love chatting with them and hearing how excited they are for the upcoming school year.”

Other cast members supported the drive through the Disney VoluntEARS program. Lauren Fremont, an ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex cast member and local middle school teacher took part in A Gift For Teaching’s Great Big Backpack Build. This initiative helped pack 2,000 backpacks with essential school supplies, contributing to A Gift For Teaching’s total of 15,000 backpacks filled. In total, Disney VoluntEARS spent more than 2,000 hours helping Back-to-School endeavors this year.

Thousands of cast members and Disney VoluntEARS across Walt Disney World Resort have impacted children, both inside a classroom and at the resort. Kudos to all of them for their support of kids and teachers at this year’s drive!
