Director James Gunn Confirms Vol. 3 Will Feature the Last Team-Up for the Original 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy have had a feeling that something was coming to shake up the team, and now Director James Gunn has come right out to share that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last time we see the original Guardians of the Galaxy team-up. The famed director shared with Deadline’s Hero Nation Podcast,

This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians. It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be. I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best.

Clearly, part of Gunn’s statement means that some new members may be joining the Guardians officially, but it does seem as if a core character’s death or departure is on the table as well. Notably, James was asked during a Q+A on Twitter if someone will die in Vol. 3 to which he quickly responded, “Yes.” Many have speculated that Rocket Raccoon’s fate seems to be the one hanging in the balance, especially given the fact that James Gunn has previously claimed that Rocket is his “self-insert” in the movies for a variety of reasons and that their personal stories are closely intertwined.

Another theory is that Drax will not return after the next film, with Dave Bautista sharing he is getting”too old” to keep up with the role and also claiming he won’t work on a Guardians film without Gunn as the director. James has been adamant that Drax’s story is far from over, but it may not be enough to keep fans from thinking that Drax could easily be the one to step away or be killed in the upcoming movie.

Regardless of how the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 playout for the Guardians, it is sad to know that with James’ exit from the franchise we will also be saying goodbye to the team lineup we have come to know and love throughout their journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Who do you think will be joining or leaving the Guardians of the Galaxy? Do you suspect a major character death or separation is coming? We would love to hear your thoughts and theories in the comments. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Company for updates and all things Marvel!
