Director James Gunn Confirms When ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Takes Place in the MCU Timeline. Director James Gunn is one of the most candid production members in the industry and loves doing Q+A’s with fans on Twitter where he teases and sometimes confirms rumors and leaks to prevent confusion among fans.

Recently, the famed director shared insight into ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ after ScreenRant correctly guessed the fate of an unspecified character in the film. Though he didn’t say WHICH character fate was the right one he did share that the third Guardians movie would take place in the present-day, presumably at the time of the film’s release in 2023 which would put the film after the events of Avengers: Endgame and presumably after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder.

Gunn had previously shared that the Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special coming to Disney+ would be MCU canon and would be filmed simultaneously with Vol. 3. Speaking with Collider, James shared, “[The Holiday Special is] in-canon, it’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great I’m really happy with it.”

The director also confirmed the rumor this week that Will Poulter had been cast as Adam Warlock for the upcoming film and welcomed him to the Guardians Family. Poulter as an MCU newcomer will join returning cast members Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Sean Gunn as well as some additional familiar faces from the previous films.
