Daisy Ridley, known best for her role as ‘Rey’ in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, is negotiating with Disney about a role in the new ‘Young Woman and the Sea’ movie! The movie follows the determination and hard work of the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel- Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle.
Ederle, a competitive swimmer, made the 21-mile swim in 1926. She decided that she wanted another challenge after winning the gold medal in the 1924 Olympics and set her goal- to swim across the English Channel. She first started out by swimming 22 miles from Battery Park in New York to Sandy Hook, NJ, setting a record that stood for 81 years! You go, girl!
Of course, the journey wasn’t easy. Only five men had completed this quest before, but that wasn’t stopping Ederle. With the help of her family, they put together a two-piece bathing suit (which was scandalous during this time) and even used candle wax to seal her goggles to make them leak-proof. She fought the treacherous waves and wind and made it across!
Ederle gave so many women the courage to do what seems impossible, or only possible by a man! Daisy Ridley would be playing an amazing part in this movie.
Disney is also negotiating for Joachim Rønning to direct the film. He most recently directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil for Disney. Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman are producing, and we could even see the film debut on Disney+!
