Cast Members celebrate groundbreaking on Toontown Re-Imagining in Disneyland!

Earlier this year, Disney announced that Mickey’s Toontown would be closing in Disneyland for an update. The area in the park as since closed and the groundbreaking on the Toontown re-imagining has begun!

Disney shared a photo of cast members breaking ground outside of Toontown City Hall. The pavement is completely gone, leaving only dirt. You can see scaffolding and fencing up in the background where work is sure to be done.

Mickey’s Toontown first opened at Disneyland in 1993 and featured the homes of some of our favorite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck. Guests could interact with their favorite character, take a whacky ride on Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, or grab a bite to eat at Pluto’s Dog House.

The area closed on March 8, 2022, and is scheduled to reopen in 2023. Imagineers are working to create some all-new experiences so families and young children can have more opportunities to play together inside Disneyland park. Focusing on today’s families with young children, Mickey’s Toontown will feature new play experiences, as well as open, grassy play spaces for everyone to unplug. The land will have landscaping for both spontaneous family play and parental relaxation.

Also debuting alongside the newly imagined area will be Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. This family-friendly and adventurous ride is also open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World.
