Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange Joins the Cast of ‘Spider-Man 3′. It comes as no surprise that Doctor Strange will be taking on a much bigger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) now that key figures such as Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man are gone. With his upcoming appearances in WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now Spider-Man 3, it seems some major dimension diving is about to occur.
THR shared the news in an exclusive report, stating “Benedict Cumberbatch is putting on the cloak of levitation and will reprise Marvel supernatural hero Doctor Strange for the latest Spider-Man movie installment, starring Tom Holland and being made by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.” they continued, “The move puts Cumberbatch in the mentor role that was previously occupied by Robert Downey Jr., who played Tony Stark/Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and by Samuel L. Jackson in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the latter reprising Nick Fury. The role gives Holland a chance to play opposite seasoned actors, gives Peter Parker a father figure and gives the movies extra star power while also tying them to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Cumberbatch’s appearance in the film will likely explain the introduction, or re-introduction I should say, of Jaime Foxx’s Electro for the film, as well as some expected plot holes that may arise after the premiere of WandaVision on Disney+. Spider-Man 3 is set to begin filming next week in New York City, rumored to be taking place in Queens.
