App Review – Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe and Hero’s Duty Interactive Comics

Based on ticket sales and chatter, I am going to guess that most of you know and many of you have seen “Wreck-It Ralph” and have enjoyed Disney’s latest hit. A few weeks ago I posted some info and let you know I would be reviewing the two digital apps that compliment the movie. These two apps, Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic and Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe are both available on iTunes and are a great side dish to a favorite movie. With both apps having something completely different to offer I was able to enjoy both apps and for different reasons.

Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic

I am going to tell you first about Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic which was the least engaging of the two, probably by design. This app is a digital cartoon book of Hero’s Duty and you can read as it interactively tells the prequel story to Wreck-It Ralph. So based on a quick glance it looks like a regular cartoon but then the characters start talking and moving and it tells its story in a little action movie in the book. You have the action of auto play or reading it panel by panel. It only takes a few minutes to get through all of this app and other than the story there was nothing else going on to make it a must buy. But, it was well done and engaging, I imagine that kids who love army style comic books would enjoy this digital cartoon book and based on the $1.99 cost…why not make some kids day?

Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe

On the other hand, the Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe app is filled with several different compartments of entertainment and is well worth the higher cost of $6.99. This app would appeal to not only lovers of the movie, “Wreck-It Ralph” but game lovers and pretty much anyone looking to have a little interaction fun. With this app you can “read” the story of “Wreck-It Ralph” as it is told by a cartoon digital book as well. The reading portion of the story is interactive and as you touch parts of the screen additional parts of the story are told. For example, when you touch Felix in the game screen the door opens and his little minions come out and award him the medal. Each “page” has ways to get more involved with the story and make it much more than a cartoon book and more like an interactive movie.

The other parts of the app are cute and fun games. Yes, I said it appeals to everyone and then I used the word “cute” so I am sure the male readers out there are questioning whether they would like this or not. The good news is I believe it truly is for almost everyone, since there are options and it is some designing of your own storyline “characters” (Karts) in the Kart field then it was cute. That is because I made my Kart cute…if this is not your ideal, go for a more manly or whatever floats your boat as there are plenty of options of candy designs.

Once you have finished your Kart you can use it or a pre made Kart to race on a track with other cars. To move the car you turn the screen left or right and move around to collect turbo candy pieces and bubble gum looking jumps. I used the car I made and came in second out of five, I am telling you this because I am no good at these games, so I chose Easy (there are 3 levels of Easy, Medium and Hard) so the good news is from little kids to pro gamers there is a level for you (and Easy for me!) In addition to the different levels of difficulty there is 3 different tracks to choose from that all have a different look and feel.

Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic ($1.99) and Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe ($6.99) are available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch on the App Store.

I hope you enjoy the apps and let me know if you do or if I missed something!
