How to NOT Commit a Pet Peeve at Walt Disney World

How to NOT Commit a Pet Peeve at Walt Disney World

Vacationing at Walt Disney World can be a magical, wonderful experience. However, when others commit one of the Top Ten Pet Peeves at Walt Disney World, it suddenly loses its luster, even if for just a moment. Today, I’d like to share with you some alternatives to keep you from committing a Top Ten Pet Peeves.

10. Choose a parade spot at least an hour before it starts. If you want a spot right up at the route ropes, or along the curb at Main Street USA, you’ll need to stake it out asap. Not able to do so? Then find a different viewing spot, or try to have an alternative day to view the parade.

9. When stopping to check your map, move over to the right of the sidewalk, or into a shop.  This will help you concentrate, a cast member will be readily available to help, and a traffic jam won’t happen on Main Street USA :).

8. Waiting in line for an attraction? Keep a few feet between your party and the group ahead of you. I know that for some cultures, personal space isn’t an issue. However, when in Rome, do as the Romans….in other words, Americans appreciate their personal space.

7. Keep your party together in line for attractions and shows. Sending Dad to wait in line while the other four people in your family enjoy another attraction or grab a snack isn’t good manners.

6. Know your child’s breaking point. Take a break at your resort, on a monorail ride, or in a restaurant to avoid meltdowns. You can’t be frustrated with your child, and let everyone know it, when you keep shoving Disney down their throat.

5. Many rides suggest you don’t take flash photos. Follow this suggestion! It ruins it for everyone around you, and taking video is intrusive.  Many times, I’ve found that I rarely watch the videos of rides or attractions that I’ve taken.

4. If you want your child to have a good view of a parade or show, plan accordingly. Your shoulders isn’t a good idea….it ruins the view for others around you. Or, nicely ask the people in front of you if there is a small bit of room for your young child….but not for you and your whole family.

3. Do you really want to video the fireworks? In my experience, this just is distracting for others, especially along Main Street USA, when the lights are out for a few moments. Enjoy the moment-chances are you won’t get good video anyway.

2. Send one person through bag check at the Disney parks. Have the rest of your party go through the area for guests without bags. And, have your bag ready to be checked.

1. Always have your camera handy and ready for pictures.

Having manners instead of a sense of entitlement, can make your Disney trip smoother. It could be your first or fiftieth trip-either way, you probably don’t have the park to yourself. That’s when you need to be aware of others around you and take simple steps to courtesy.

Magically Yours,
Carrie

  1. I love this list! I hate how others shove their kids to the front as they stand int he back. ummm my child was their already watching! The best is the people who leave the kid “for a sec” to go get snacks. HELLO Im not your sitter!

  2. I have to say I am guilty of videotaping rides. No flash, no loud commentary, I sit on the end and video as quietly as possible. We do watch them, often, I shared them with my mother who is disabled, and terminally ill, she can’t go to the parks. Hold the camera down and to the side, no one needs to see it. I don’t hold it up over my head where it would be in the way of anyone’s view.

  3. I just had that same experience on Pirates. There were three or four people on my boat that were making it look like lightning through out the whole ride. I finally got the nerve to say something and found out they did not understand english. Luckily my second ride was better. Luckily it was this month and the line was non existent.

  4. If you don’t keep up with your party you may end up riding with a stranger. This happened to me on Splash Mountain. This little Indian lady was seated with me and my friends. She held my arm every time there was a drop and insisted that everyone hold on tightly. I saw the humor in it; especially when I saw the picture at the end of a stranger clinging on to me for dear life.

  5. I’m going to add a few comments here as a Cast Member:

    1. KEEP UP WITH THE PARTY IN FRONT OF YOU: I know there is that whole personal space thing and you’re having a great time talking and whatnot, but when we are trying to get you on the ride and we have to either send the ride without you and hold it for you to get on, its frustrating for all involved.

    2. DO NOT TRY TO GROUP YOURSELF: When you get to the front of the line and you tell us you have two when you really have six, don’t complain when you all don’t end up sitting together. When we ask how many of you there are, we do so so that we can seat you as best as possible for us AND you.

    3. NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY: I know you already mentioned it, but its a big one. Not only is it rude to others around you, but its also a HUGE safety hazard. Most rides have sensors that the flash can trigger and shut down the ride, but also there may be guests with epilepsy on the ride as well which the constant flashing in such a dark place can cause them to have a seizure.

    4. NEVER BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS: I see countless guests a day with that same quizzical look upon their face and I’ve heard just about every question in the book. NO question is dumb to us. And if we don’t know the answer, you can bet that we will ask a fellow Cast Member to find the answer for you. Our job is to make sure you guests have a fun vacation. We don’t want you to spend two hours looking for Pirates League only to find it has already closed.

    5. HAVE FUN!: You’re at the parks to have a great time. We know you probably spent quite a bit of money to be here with us and we want you to enjoy every minute of it. If there is something you think we can do to make it more worth your while, ask or suggest it. We really do take what you say into consideration. After all, were only here because of our guests.

  6. Another pet peeve of mine is when people take entirely too much time in a table service restaurant during peak hours. Some people finish eating and then sit there to wait out weather or heat etc, and then later are the same people who complain about being rushed out of there.
I would not want to be rushed TOO much in a Disney table service restaurant considering the money I am shelling out to eat Disney,
BUT you also have to respect the time constraints that Disney is dealing with… Other people made reservations and are paying to eat there too and are waiting on you to finish. Chances are, some of those people have hungry and crying kids as well.
Enjoy yourself and don’t necessarily RUSH, but also don’t take your sweet time during lunch/dinner rush in a popular restaurant…
