Jonathan Taylor Thomas, the former child star known to Disney fans as the voice of young Simba in the 1994 animated classic “The Lion King,” was arrested in California after deputies pulled him over during an early-morning traffic stop on Monday.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Thomas was a passenger in a vehicle that deputies encountered in the Westlake Village area on Sept. 21. Authorities said deputies began conducting field sobriety tests on the driver when Thomas repeatedly exited the vehicle and approached them, allegedly interfering with the investigation. Deputies said Thomas appeared intoxicated and was detained for obstruction and public intoxication.
Authorities allege that while deputies were attempting to take Thomas into custody, he kicked one deputy in the stomach. Thomas was booked at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station and later released. The driver of the vehicle was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. As of Sept. 24, no charges had been filed against Thomas, and the case was expected to be submitted to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
Thomas became one of the biggest young stars of the 1990s while playing Randy Taylor alongside Tim Allen on “Home Improvement,” appearing in 181 episodes of the hit sitcom. Disney fans also know his voice well from “The Lion King,” where he brought young Simba to life before the character grew into the adult lion voiced by Matthew Broderick.

Thomas largely stepped away from acting in later years, with one of his final television appearances coming on Allen’s “Last Man Standing” in 2015. He also directed an episode of the series in 2016. Thomas returned to the public eye in July, reuniting with former “Home Improvement” co-stars Patricia Richardson and Taran Noah Smith.
