Massive ‘Monsters, Inc.’ Door Coaster Building Takes Shape at Hollywood Studios
The skyline at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is officially changing! Construction on the highly anticipated Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster has reached a major milestone as the massive steel framework for the attraction’s show building now towers high above the park.
Visible even from the guest parking lots and surrounding areas, the colossal gravity building is rapidly taking shape as crews work to enclose what will become one of the most innovative ride systems in Disney Parks history.
Recent ground-level and aerial construction updates show massive progress across the ride’s footprint, located in a former backstage Cast Member parking lot behind the upcoming Monstropolis land:
- Roof Decking & Framework: Heavy steel columns and trusses now span across varying roof heights, with roof decking officially installed over key sections of the building.
- Vertical Lift Systems Taking Shape: At the heart of the building stand two massive, 40-foot-plus steel towers that will power the attraction’s vertical lift sequence. Guests will board suspended ride vehicles on the factory floor before being hoisted straight up into the ceiling to launch through the Door Vault.
- Thematic Arches: Curved steel framing has been erected around the station area, resembling the iconic “M” logo and archways inspired by the Laugh Floor and scare factory from the Pixar films.
When it opens, the Door Coaster will hold two major titles for Disney Parks: it will be Disney’s first-ever suspended roller coaster and its first vertical lift coaster. Hanging beneath the track, the ride vehicles will recreate the heart-pounding, high-speed door vault chase from Monsters, Inc.
The Door Coaster is the marquee feature of the new Monstropolis land, which is replacing the former Muppets Courtyard area. Disney recently updated park guide maps to officially mark the area as the “Future Home of Monstropolis.”
The new land will open in phases, beginning with themed dining at Harryhausen’s (replacing Mama Melrose’s) and the new stage show “Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike” inside The Glob Theater.
