New Scrim Installed in Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion Stretching Room

Foolish Mortals! If you’ve stepped into Liberty Square’s most iconic mansion recently, you might have noticed a subtle change above your head during the pre-show.

Disney has officially replaced the ceiling scrim in the left Stretching Room of The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom following weeks of guest confusion regarding the famous hanging corpse scene.

The change comes after parkgoers noticed that the hanging corpse—revealed during the dramatic lightning flash at the climax of the Ghost Host’s monologue—had become nearly invisible.

The issue wasn’t the removal of the iconic effect, but rather a severe buildup of grime and dust on the fabric scrim over time, blocking light from penetrating the ceiling canvas properly. The obscurity sparked widespread speculation among Disney fans online that Imagineering had quietly retired the controversial hanging figure.

Disney initially attempted to resolve the issue by cleaning the existing scrim and readjusting the room’s lighting overhead. However, dirty markings remained visible on the fabric even after the deep clean, prompting Disney to replace the entire scrim ceiling in the left pre-show chamber.

The brand-new replacement scrim features crisp, refreshed detail:

• Updated Design Detail: Fresh shading defines the geometric octagonal and triangular patterns embedded in the ceiling graphic.
• Restored Visibility: Combined with fine-tuned lighting, the swinging corpse silhouette overhead is once again sharp and clearly visible during the show’s climactic reveal.

Currently, only the left Stretching Room has received the replacement fabric, while the right Stretching Room continues to operate with its existing setup.

Rumors regarding the removal of the hanging scene have circulated for years across both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort due to sensitive themes surrounding suicide. While Imagineers have acknowledged discussions about modifying the pre-show scene in past interviews, Disney has clarified that removing the iconic hanging corpse element is no longer under consideration.
