Speedy Gonzales Animated Movie Officially in Development
¡Arriba! Speedy Gonzales is finally getting the big-screen treatment he deserves. Warner Bros. has officially placed the project in the capable hands of director Jorge R. Gutiérrez, known for his vibrant and culturally rich animation style. Though we’re still waiting on a plot synopsis and a confirmed writer, the pairing of Gutiérrez with this classic Looney Tunes hero has fans buzzing about a modern, “spicy” reimagining of the character.

Speedy Gonzales has been a fan-favorite since his Oscar-winning debut in 1955. Known as the fastest mouse in Mexico, he remains a staple of the Looney Tunes crew, having recently shared the screen with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in Space Jam: A New Legacy.
Steering this new solo adventure is Jorge R. Gutiérrez, the visionary director behind The Book of Life and Maya and the Three. With deep roots in Mexico City and Tijuana, Gutiérrez brings a unique cultural lens and a decorated history—including multiple Emmy wins—to the project, making him the ideal filmmaker to reimagine this classic character for modern audiences.
“Jorge is a singular storyteller whose voice, artistry, and cultural perspective make every project he touches feel both timeless and completely new,” says Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. “We couldn’t be more excited to have him reimagining Speedy Gonzales for today’s global audience.”
This announcement marks a fresh start for a project that has spent years in development. Comedian Eugenio Derbez was famously attached to a previous version in 2016, but he expressed doubts about its future in a 2024 interview, citing studio concerns over the character being “politically incorrect.” Derbez defended the icon, noting that while some critics view him as a stereotype, he is a beloved hero in Mexico. “He’s smart. He outsmarts the cats… He gets cheese for his people,” Derbez remarked, highlighting the character’s role as a clever underdog.
