A Three-Part Event Honoring Disney Animation History
Favreau confirmed that the project will be presented as a three-part miniseries on Disney+. In a nostalgic nod to classic Hollywood craftsmanship, the series will blend live-action settings with traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation, placing Oswald directly into real-world historic environments—including a first look showing Oswald standing on Walt Disney’s own desk!
To pull off this ambitious hybrid look, Favreau recruited veteran 2D animators alongside leading international animation houses, including Sergio Pablos’ SPA Studios (Klaus).

Musical Legacy: John Debney Scores the Series

Debney boasts a rich history with the Walt Disney Company, having composed scores for beloved classics like Hocus Pocus, The Emperor’s New Groove, The Princess Diaries, and Favreau’s 2016 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book.

Release Window & Fan Perks
Mark your calendars! The Oswald miniseries is officially slated to premiere on Disney+ in February 2027.

The early 2027 arrival holds extra significance for animation historians, as it coincides with the 100th anniversary of Oswald’s creation. Disney fans attending the D23 Entertainment Showcase presentation also received collectible Oswald cards as a special event keepsake.
The History of the Lucky Rabbit
Created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927, Oswald predates the debut of Mickey Mouse. After Disney lost the character rights to Universal in 1928, Mickey was created as his successor.
Disney famously regained the rights to Oswald in 2006, and the character has since built a dedicated fan base through Disney Parks appearances, merchandise, and featured roles in video games like the Epic Mickey series. Now, a century after his debut, Oswald is finally headlining his own brand-new series!
