Filmmaker Joe Dante, who made the “Gremlins” movie franchise, is accusing Lucasfilm of ”shamelessly” copying his work for creating Grogu.
Joe Dante told the San Francisco Chronicle during that he attributes fans’ continued fondness for his 1984 cult favorite Gremlins to the lovable Mogwai named Gizmo, voiced in the films by Howie Mandel. However, he had some strong words about a popular Star Wars character.
The Hollywood Reporter shares his quote:
“I think the longevity of [the film] is really key to this one character (Gizmo), who is essentially like a baby,” Dante told the publication. “Which brings me, of course, to the subject of Baby Yoda, who is completely stolen and is just out-and-out copied. Shamelessly, I would think.”

Representatives for The Mandalorian and series creator Jon Favreau did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Grogu debuted in the pilot episode of Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars” streaming series “The Mandalorian.”
The “Gremlins” franchise is returning this fall thanks to the HBO Max animated series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” which Dante served as a consultant on. The series features a voice cast that includes Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong and James Hong.
