Pixar Animations Studios LGBTQ+ and allied staff members released a joint statement to the executive team of Disney on March 9th claiming the company has “actively censored overtly gay affection” in the studios’ featured films and concern over the lack of a statement from parent company The Walt Disney Company regarding the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill despite claims of inclusivity being an important aspect of TWDC’s operations and culture.
It should be noted that on March 11th Disney CEO Bob Chapek released a statement to employees throughout the Walt Disney Company addressing complaints against the inaction, but the company has yet to release a formal statement regarding the concerns. Chapek has assured a formal response and implementation will be presented in the coming weeks.

Reportedly, the upcoming animated feature film ‘Lightyear’ was set to feature a same-sex kiss between Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) and her currently unnamed female partner/love interest. The kiss was reportedly removed from the film, despite the relationship status remaining a part of the story. In response to the joint statement, Disney-Pixar has reinstated the scene in question.
Lightyear will not be the first title to feature LGBTQ+ representation for Pixar Animation Studios, with other LGBTQ+ representative characters appearing in the Pixar Sparkshort Out, Toy Story 4, Finding Dory, Onward, and a potential unconfirmed moment in the new hit film Turning Red. Members of the LGBTQ+ community also shared a feeling of inclusivity in ‘Luca‘ despite the production team claiming the story intentionally takes place at a “pre-romance” time for Luca, Alberto, and Guilia.
