You may remember that Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently welcomed a new baby hippopotamus. Born July 12th, we now know a little bit more about this sweet calf. It’s a female who goes by the name Greta. Her name was chosen to pay homage to the classic children’s tale “Hansel and Gretel,” along with her oldest brother Hans. She was born to mom Tuma and has a second older brother named Augustus, who was born in early 2018.

According to the Animal Care Experts at Animal Kingdom, Greta has been a bit shy from the outset. She seems to be adjusting to her surroundings well though and is venturing out to explore more these days! Like most young hippos, she enjoys playing in the water and can do barrel rolls. Fun fact: hippos can’t swim, so while Greta may be able to do some cool tricks underwater, she will get from one point to another by walking along the bottom or pushing off the side.

Greta lives on the Kilimanjaro Safaris, a rugged ride that puts guests up close with the wildlife at the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. These 110 acres are home to 34 species living in diverse habitats. And Greta isn’t the only little one born there this year. In June, a baby giraffe was born at Animal Kingdom, April saw a baby mandrill arrive, and May brought a new baby zebra.
