Soft Opening for Jurassic World VelociCoaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

Soft Opening for Jurassic World VelociCoaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

Soft Opening for Jurassic World VelociCoaster was all the rumor this morning in the blogosphere. We decided to head over to the park around 11:00 am this morning with hopes that the rumors would pan out. We joined the others who had also heard the rumors next to The Watering Hole.

The rumors turned out to be true! Just around Noon, we were rewarded with the gates being opened and the mad rush to get in the queue before they closed it back down. Off we go! Velocicoaster opened today for the first time for regular park goes. Soft opening or not, if you were in the park today it was open. Within 2 hours, the App listed Velocisoaster as open with a wait time of 75 minutes max. It has closed every once in a while when it has hit capacity. Reopening when the queue would clear up again. As I write this, it is open!

Previously the only ones to ride Velocicoaster have been Annual Passholders who had to sign up a few weeks ago, and Team Members. So it was nice to see it open to the Guests today. Just to be clear, this is a Soft Opening or Technical Rehearsal. The ride is not officially open yet. Velocicoaster opens on June 10, 2021. There is no guarantee it will be open tomorrow. But, I heard a rumor…

The roller coaster employs a “revolutionary” ride vehicle that has been “specially designed to intensify the thrills.” Those thrills occur across 4,700 feet of track, some of which sits just inches above the water of Islands of Adventure’s central lagoon. It features a few near-misses and two launches, with at least one occurring within Jurassic World’s raptor paddock and the faster of the two hitting 70 mph in just 2.4 seconds. There are four inversions, some of which brandish such descriptions as “one of a kind” and “the first of its kind”: a 360-degree barrel roll above water and a zero-gravity inverted stall that lasts for some 100 feet. And then there’s that massive, 155-foot hill, which contains an 80-degree drop. All told, Universal promises a total of 12 seconds of airtime – an exhilarating amount of time for riders to be lifted out of their seats.
