Wilderness Lodge is a popular, deluxe resort at Walt Disney World. Since it opened in 1994, guests have been enjoying this adventurous yet noble resort and all of its offerings. While there is a lot to see, do, and appreciate about Wilderness Lodge, check out my top 5 best things about this fantastic Disney resort!
1. Theme-Part of Wilderness Lodge’s appeal is its Pacific Northwest theme. When you stay or visit Wilderness Lodge, you truly feel as if you have left central Florida for a retreat at one of our nation’s national parks. It’s like two vacations in one! Where else can you experience the wonders of the West in comfort and luxury with a Disney twist!
2. Price-While Wilderness Lodge is a deluxe resort with close proximity to the Magic Kingdom, it typically runs cheaper than the majority of other deluxe resorts. Part of the reason for this is because Wilderness Lodge does not provide monorail transportation and the rooms are smaller in comparison to other deluxe rooms. However, for guests and families on a budget, this resort is a little more economical while still ofering the deluxe experience and its benefits.
3. Dining-Wilderness Lodge offers some great dining options! First of all, there’s the Whispering Canyon Cafe. This table service restaurant is quite an adventure with hilarious waiters, stick horse races around the restaurant, and delicious, hearty homecooked selections! Artist Point is a signature restaurant offering refined, American dishes. Dining here is a luxurious and scrumptious experience; and many consider it a hidden gem in the Disney dining world. Finally, for a quick meal or snack, there’s the Roaring Fork. It’s a mini-food court with seating both indoors and out, great for families on-the-go or on a budget. For more info on Wilderness Lodge dining, check out this post here!
4. Design-Wilderness Lodge was actually designed after the real lodges in the West. The lobby is breathtaking with its giant log columns and beams, 7 story high ceiling, and warm, earthy colors. There’s also a towering fireplace that’s 82 feet tall representing the layers of the Grand Canyon, along with cozy rockers situated nearby. Along with a variety of artwork and historical displays to enjoy, the lobby also holds a bubbling spring that flows under a bridge and out into the resort’s main pool. The rooms here also follow the resort’s design of rugged elegance, as evidenced by the log beds and furniture, rustic light fixtures, and nature inspired artwork.
5. Location-Wilderness Lodge is located on Seven Seas Lagoon, the same lake shared by the Magic Kingdom and other deluxe resorts. The Magic Kingdom is only a short, picturesque boat ride away; and right next door to this resort is Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. You can reach Fort Wilderness by boat or walking trail for more outdoor fun and other dining and entertainment opportunities.

We love the Wilderness Lodge!! We probably won’t ever stay anywhere else! We honeymooned there, took our twins there last year, and are planning on going this December!! It is decorated beautifully for the holidays! Can’t wait to go back!!
We just did a two week stay at the Wilderness Lodge and fell in love with the resort. We got to be the flag family on the 4th of July which was simply magical. We loved the boat ride over to MK and bus service to the other parks was relatively quick.
@Cynthia-we were flag family on the trip we just returned from. It was our first stay at WL and we were the flag family, it was such a cool experience and WOW what a view!!!
We love the Wilderness Lodge. Can’t wait to see it decorated for the holidays when we go at Thanksgiving!
What a coincidence! I’m planning a trip to Disney for Thanksgiving too!
I agree about Whispering Canyon Cafe, it’s one of my places for breakfast at Disney!
I know what you mean. While I like being close to the Magic Kingdom, I enjoy being closer to Epcot and DHS more, like what you get at the Yacht and Beach Club and the Boardwalk.
8 would fit in a 2BR villa!
Love the Wilderness Lodge! We hope to be able to spend the holidays there this year!!!
I stayed at Wilderness Lodge many years ago, loved it! The atmosphere and design is fantastic. Can’t wait to be able to stay there again and share the experience with my husband and children.
I have stayed there twice and even though we loved the atmosphere and the boat rides to MK, we didn’t like that we were so far from the parking lot lol. We use our vehicle A LOT and we were happy we had a split stay last year – when we got to All Star Movies, we were happy to have a room very close to the parking lot 🙂 WL is an awesome hotel with an awesome pool though and we loved sitting on our balcony and listening to the water pageant each night!!!
We’ve never stayed at Wilderness Lodge but Whispering Canyon Cafe is one of our favorite places to eat.
I have never stayed at the Wilderness Lodge Hotel technically speaking, I have stayed at the DVC villas there. We had an amazing time! We have stayed there twice in the villas. We love the whole atmosphere there. We quite enjoy the peaceful side of the villas and the smaller pool there. While we did partake in a bit of swimming in the big one, we enjoyed taking our kids to the smaller one giving them much more freedom and room to play. They felt it was “their” pool. OF COURSE they loved whispering Canyon Cafe, my daughter had the best time galloping around the place on her horse. Even though we have stayed at other places on the property we always try to get to the whispering Canyon for a early dinner. As a side note……Buffalo at the Artist Point……Absolutely amazing!
When we booked our room at WL thru DVC a few years ago, we were a little ambivalent, but the hubs wanted to try it because of the location. We absolutely LOVED it – for all the reasons posted here. We especially loved being able to jump on the boat to & from MK while everyone waited in long Monorail lines. And Whispering Canyon is not to be missed – we’ve never been for lunch or dinner cuz we can’t get past the fabulous breakfast!
Could a family of 8 fit there easily? I have only heard WONDERFUL things about this resort. It is on my list of places “to one day stay at”
Thanks for the article, you have made me even more excited about staying there next July.
Love the resort, stayed there once, and loved Artist’s Point. Only thing I am not a fan of is the proximity to other parks. Prefer to be closer to DHS and EPCOT than I am the MK.
I love the Wilderness Lodge. My family love the outdoors and hiking and camping and this is a great resort for our family. And we all love the water that starts in the lobby and goes out to the pool.
Love Everything about it. And if you plan on staying and haven’t done it, request to be the flag family. Each day the rangers pick a family to help raise the 5 flags on top of the Wilderness Lodge. What an amazing experiance it was.
