Disney Cruise Line may not be doing any sailings at the moment, but they still have their hands full. A former manager of food operations is suing them for negligence. The incident involved a chocolate explosion that left the man severely injured back in 2018.
Michael Palus is a Frenchman who worked for the Disney Cruise Line as a seaman, working in the kitchens. It was November 18th of 2018 when a pressurized chocolate canister was improperly placed on boiling water and exploded where Palus was working in the main pastry area. The accident caused him severe facial burns and eventually lead to permanent hearing loss in his left ear.
According to his lawsuit, Palus states that Disney Cruise Line did not provide a reasonably safe workspace. He claims that the crew is not properly trained in the safe execution of their duties, that not all tasks are achieved safely due to a lack of means, and that the crew is not allotted adequate space and surface-area in the pastry area to complete their tasks without using heated and therefore unsafe areas. These are just some of the reasons that Palus names in his suit. In total, there are 25 reasons he claims the environment is not reasonably safe.
Palus is suing for disability pay and any damages that the law and his contract will allow. In the future, his attorneys say that these types of issues can be avoided through the proliferation of safety manuals and the modification or elimination of job hazards like the ones mentioned in the lawsuit.
