State legislators call on Gov Newsom to reopen California theme parks

California state legislators are calling on Governor Newsom reopen California theme parks. A group of 19 legislators sent the governor a letter urging him to issue COVID-19 health and safety guidelines that would allow California theme parks to reopen.

Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, and other California theme parks have been closed due to the pandemic for over 6 months now. The closures have left 135,000 park employees out of work.

“We believe the time is now to move forward with theme park reopenings,” the letter states.

Newsom said earlier this month that reopening guidelines would be available “very very shortly” but has yet to actually release said guidelines. Disneyland is ready to reopen and can do so safely. The theme parks are just waiting on the state to allow that to happen.

“We ask your administration to provide the theme park industry with their guidance documents promptly so they can ensure their preparations are consistent with state expectations,” the letter says.

Many other businesses have been allowed to reopen under the new tiered state reopening system. The theme parks were left out of that program.

“Theme parks, however, have not been addressed in this blueprint — they have no path forward, no guidance documents for the state’s expectations related to reopening, and no sense of timing to share with their anxious employees and guests,” according to the letter. “Counties are already beginning to move through tiers and yet none know when this large sector within their communities will be allowed to reopen.”

Disneyland, along with other theme parks, has submitted plans for safely reopening. Mandatory masks, social distancing, increased sanitization, contactless payments, reduced attraction capacity and employee training are all included in the proposed plans.

“Theme parks have spent the past six months preparing to reopen in a responsible manner,” according to the letter. “They have comprehensive plans that include capacity reductions, thorough health and safety protocols, and park-wide modifications to support these efforts.”

When will the governor listen to the state legislators, theme park officials, and city leaders?
