Even though the theme parks are open, SeaWorld Orlando is facing financial burdens brought upon by the global pandemic. SeaWorld Orlando is laying off many furloughed employees at both their theme parks and corporate offices. According to the Orlando Sentinel, nearly 1,900 furloughed employees permanently lost their jobs this month at SeaWorld’s three Orlando properties.
This latest round of layoffs comes as the company tried to recover from revenue and attendance losses. In a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing, SeaWorld announced their layoff decision. They’re changing the status of some park and corporate employees due to the “unforeseeable impacts” the COVID-19 pandemic has had on its business.
Furthermore, SeaWorld shows a $131 million loss for the second quarter since attendance fell 96%. The entertainment company is hoping to rebound and recover in the months to come.
A notice with the state of Florida reveals the number of layoffs includes 1,896 employees at SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica Orlando and Discovery Cove. A SeaWorld spokesperson gave the following statement:
While we were able to bring thousands of furloughed Ambassadors back to work and hoped to bring back everyone, the current environment requires us to set up the company for long term success. SeaWorld has determined that it must transition certain park and corporate personnel from a furloughed status to a permanent layoff.
