Deadpool Creator Wants to See Ryan Reynolds As 'Green Lantern' Again Before 'Deadpool 3'

Deadpool Creator Wants to See Ryan Reynolds As ‘Green Lantern’ Again Before ‘Deadpool 3‘. Rob Liefeld has not shied away from sharing his discontent with how the Deadpool franchise appears to be taking a back seat to the “master plan” for the MCU at Marvel Studios.

The Deadpool comics creator shared in a recent interview, “I blame Marvel…blame Marvel that that hasn’t happened yet,” Liefeld says. “They are the reason it isn’t happening. Whatever conundrum or it didn’t fit into your master plan, just commission it. Okay, commission it. You know if Frank Frazetta was still around, you would say, ‘Frank paint for me.’ “If Ryan isn’t making Deadpool 3 right now, that’s because Marvel hasn’t allowed it to be yet and that’s all I’m saying. So, do I have a lot of faith in that system? Dude, I have no idea. So this is where I’m not that, I’m not giving you the answers you want. I’m like yeah, yeah. Look if it happens, terrific. How old am I gonna be when that happens? And literally I used to be like, yeah, Mark Ruffalo, Hulk and Deadpool would make for a funny movie right? But, none of these guys are getting younger, right okay?”

During a recent episode of “Talking Shop” with ComicBook.com, the topic came up about actors who switch studios, such as Reynolds, who started off as Deadpool/Wade Wilson in X-Men: Origins, moved on to star as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern for DC and then went back to playing a more comic accurate version of Deadpool/Wade Wilson for Fox Studios before being acquired by Disney.

Liefeld went on to say at this point he would rather see Reynolds return as Green Lantern over seeing him in Deadpool 3. Yes, he really did say that. Check it out: “Isn’t that the truth? You know what I would love? You know what I would love, I would love for Ryan Reynolds to be Green Lantern again. More than him to do Deadpool 3. I would love to see him (do that).”

It is very unlikely Reynolds would return to play Hal Jordan, especially after how much he has made fun of that role over the year and considers it a relative failure in his career. He also seems more than content in his role as producer and star of the Deadpool franchise and contrary to Liefeld’s feelings, has confirmed he and Marvel Studios are actively working on making Deadpool 3 happen and possibly tying the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. Honestly, there is no better character to break that barrier than Deadpool. With his ability to break the 4th wall and frequent trips to other universes, it makes complete sense that Wade Wilson/Deadpool could be the thread that pulls the franchises together.

Liefeld did share he is very happy with how both Deadpool films panned out and would be satisfied if this was the end of the franchise, but is hopeful that a third film will be made eventually. “Look, Deadpool 1 and 2 are like two halves of a perfect whole… You can see them as video game characters and toys and Heroclix and all that. But when actors like Josh Brolin and Zazie Beetz are Domino and Cable with Ryan. It’s mindblowing (to see your creations on screen). But I also, I feel like that was a moment in time. After all this fighting, Ryan got his vision. And followed up with a sequel so fast.”

Regardless of anyones feelings, we are stoked for Deadpool 3 and know the character will find his way into the MCU somehow. We can’t wait to hear when production is fully underway! Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for all things Marvel.
