Today California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state could move to the second phase of reopening as early as this Friday. Last week Newsom released a 4-phase plan for reopening California’s economy. The state is currently in phase 1 and could enter phase 2 later this week.
Phase 2 would allow lower-risk workplaces to resume operations with modifications to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Businesses like clothing stores, sporting goods stores, toy stores, and florists could reopen later this week with proper modifications like curbside pick-up.
On Thursday Governor Newsom will release guidelines for retailers in certain sectors to reopen.
In his announcement, Newsom said the ability for health authorities to test and conduct contact tracing of infections is a key consideration for entering phase 2. He also announced that some counties will be allowed to move further into phase 2 than others.
Counties will use criteria including the capacity for testing, tracing, social distancing, and protecting vulnerable population. Some sectors where there is a lower risk of transmission will be able to reopen with some modifications.
