Bob Iger Explains Why ‘Song of the South’ Will Never Stream on Disney+. Executive Chairman Bob Iger confirmed on Wednesday that the 1946 Disney film Song of the South will never stream on Disney+, even with an “outdated cultural depictions” disclaimer. The film has been all but wiped from the public eye except on the rare occasion the tile begins to circulate among Disney fans who are curious as to why the film has been essentially black listed by the very studio that created it.
“Song of the South is a 1946 American live-action/animated musical film produced by Walt Disney and released by RKO Radio Pictures. It is based on the collection of Uncle Remus stories as adapted by Joel Chandler Harris, and stars James Baskett as Uncle Remus.”
Though the film has all but vanished from almost everywhere except the memories of those who saw the film near the time of its release in theaters and on VHS, there are still hints of the film throughout the Disney Parks and classic Disney Music. The film was inspiration for the popular attraction, Splash Mountain, and there is nary a Disney Fan who doesn’t know the tune to “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.”
Disney has been making strides to be more attuned to the work they are presenting to audiences and aim to make stories that will age better than previous titles that capitalized on “inappropriate cultural depictions” including racists characteristics/speech, tobacco and alcohol usage, and lack of diversity in casting and production. It only seems reasonable Disney would look to improve their standards and learn from past mistakes. The self-improvement is not going unnoticed Keep it up, Disney!
