‘Wicked’ Trailer Reveals Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba
After captivating audiences for two decades on stage, Wicked is set to enchant the big screen this holiday season, marking a long-awaited cinematic spectacle that promises to define a generation.
In this untold tale of the witches of Oz, Cynthia Erivo, an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-winning powerhouse known for her roles in “Harriet” and Broadway’s “The Color Purple,” takes on the role of Elphaba. Elphaba, a young woman with distinctive green skin, is on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Joining her is Ariana Grande, the Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar, who portrays Glinda, a popular and ambitious young woman yet to uncover her true heart.
Their fateful meeting at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz sparks an unlikely yet profound friendship. However, after an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their paths diverge. Glinda is enticed by power and popularity, while Elphaba remains steadfast in her authenticity, setting the stage for unexpected and shocking consequences. Their extraordinary adventures culminate in fulfilling their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The star-studded cast also includes Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress, Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey as the roguish prince Fiyero; Ethan Slater as the altruistic Munchkin student Boq; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
Notable characters Pfannee and ShenShen, portrayed by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James, respectively, add intrigue to Glinda’s story. Additionally, a new character, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle, introduces a fresh dynamic to the narrative.
Directed by Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “In the Heights”), Wicked is the inaugural chapter of a two-part immersive cultural celebration, with Wicked Part Two scheduled for release on November 26, 2025.
Produced by Marc Platt and David Stone, Wicked brings together an esteemed team of creators, including David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz, and Jared LeBoff as executive producers. Adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel, the screen version is penned by Winnie Holzman, the stage production’s book writer, and Stephen Schwartz, the legendary Grammy and Oscar-winning composer and lyricist.
Wicked, a Broadway sensation produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone, is poised to cast its spell on audiences anew as it transitions from the stage to the silver screen.
