WDW Quick Tips: Pack Light And Skip The Checked Luggage

IMG_6826

I don’t know about you, but I personally hate checking luggage. I have never had luck with it – it gets lost or banged up or misplaced or ends up on the other side of the country – oh and can I mention how this is a service many of us are PAYING for now with baggage fees?…needless to say, I try to avoid it if at all possible. Since I live in upstate New York and driving to Walt Disney World would take 20 hours or more, I choose to fly and bring as little as possible. I have come up with some tips for Packing Light for Walt Disney World that I hope can help you too:

Wear the big stuff – I generally will try and wear the one pair of jeans, hoodie, and sneakers I am packing on the airplane, as it will definitely save precious suitcase space (especially if your husband wears size 13 sneakers like mine does…). I know you might be thinking “I’m heading to sunny warm FLORIDA, so why do I even need jeans and a hoodie?” Well, for one thing, chances are pretty good that the airport and plane will still be on the cool side, plus it can get cool early and late in the day, so having these items with you can definitely come in handy

Consult your Itinerary – specifically your ADR’s – Do some research on the places you will be going/eating at while at WDW – do any of them have a dress code? If not, then your sneakers/shorts/t-shirt will likely suffice, so you can probably leave the dress pants/shoes/dresses at home. Check out the Disney dining section right here on Chip and Co to learn more and to see if any of your meals will be fancy enough to warrant a dressy outfit

Check With Your Airline – Every airline has slightly different rules, but most allow one carry on plus a ‘personal item’. The carry on can usually be one of the smaller rolling suitcases, and a personal item is anything that can fit under the seat in front of you – I usually bring a big purse/tote bag, and my husband will bring a backpack

Make A List And Stick To It – Make a frugal packing list and while doing so ask yourself questions like “do I really need 8 t shirts for a 5 day trip?” (the answer is probably NO, unless you’re prone to spilling…) and remember that you can always use the laundry facilities at your Disney Resort should something happen. Once you have the list, make sure you stick to it, don’t go tossing extra shirts and pants into your bag – you’ll need that extra suitcase room for all the Disney souvenirs you will be buying (…or, the lack of space will keep you from buying too many souvenirs and spending too much money, either way)

It may seem crazy to think about not checking any luggage for a weeklong trip to Disney – but trust me, it’s possible, and if you follow these steps you just may be successful at it as well!
