Verizon Fios Users Beware as Media Companies Hash Things Out!

If you are a Verizon Fios customer, it is possible you may have already seen the messages.  Viewers of the Disney-owned networks, such as ABC and ESPN, may no longer be available to subscribers of Verizon Fios.

This clash is the latest example of two big media companies hashing things out over the terms of carrying content to customers.  Currently, Dish and AT&T’s HBO are in a similar battle over their popular pay-TV outlet, which has resulted in days-long blackouts on the satellite company’s service.  Federal regulators take a dim view and put consumers in the middle of a fight between two corporations and offer little recourse.  Since 2010, according to the American Television Alliance, cable and satellite companies have worked through more than 800 blackouts, with 212 in 2017 alone.

The Disney Company has warned that the contract with Verizon Fios is slated to end at 5 pm on New Year’s Day.  However, things seem as if they are not set in stone yet after Disney made the following statement, “Our proven history of providing extraordinary value to consumers and distributors is unmatched. But our negotiations continue in earnest and we remain optimistic that we can reach a deal.”

Verizon Fios is also trying to remain optimistic by stating, “We are actively negotiating with Disney to ensure the best deal for our customers.”  At the end of 2017, Verizon Fios reached about 4.6 million subscribers.  In the third quarter of this year, Verizon lost 63,000 video subscriptions but “notched a net-add” of 54,000 internet connections.   That is a lot of customers lost if this negotiation doesn’t go through!

What do you think?  Are you a Verizon Fios customer?  Have you seen the ad that reads, “Don’t lose your shows”?  Would this loss even affect you as a customer?
