The live-action remakes of animated Disney classics have been hugely successful. It makes sense that Disney will continue to purse live-action versions of their most beloved films. Let’s take a look at upcoming Disney live action films!
Christopher Robin is hitting theaters this summer! And if the movie is half as adorable as the trailer then Pooh fans are in for a treat! The film stars Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell while Jim Cummings provides the voices of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger. This is a must-see family film for the summer.
Announced back in 2014 and slated to release in 2019, Dumbo is being directed by Tim Burton! Starring as Holt, a circus hand, is Colin Farrell. Eva Green plays aerial artist Colette and Danny DeVito brings ringmaster Max Medici to life. V.A. Vandevere, the villain in the film, will be played by Michael Keaton. This version seems to differ from the animated classic in a lot of ways – we can’t wait to see it when it hits theaters!
Filming for the live-action version of Aladdin wrapped at the beginning of the year. The film is set to hit theaters in 2019 so we shout start seeing some clips and sneak peaks soon – and we can’t wait! The musical movie – featuring two original songs!- stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. We will also see Will Smith stepping into the role of Genie! They have also cast Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders, another suitor for Jasmine.
Another live-action (well, CGI) Disney movie coming in 2019 is The Lion King! And it has an all-star voice cast to go along with Jon Favreau’s direction. Simba will be voiced by Donald Glover while Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner lend their voices to Pumbaa and Timon, respectively. Scar will be voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Zazu by John Oliver, and Nala by Beyoncé. And of course James Earl Jones reprises his role of Mufasa – could you even imagine anyone else in that role?!
We’ve had a lot of casting news regarding the live-action Mulan film that is set to be released in 2020. The biggest piece of casting news is that the character of Li Shang, Mulan’s love interest in the animated film, will not appear in this version. Instead, her love interest will be Chen Honghui, played by relative newcomer, Yoson An. Production is said to be starting later this summer.
While not really a remake, the Maleficent II has begun filming. Angeline Jolie is back in the title role with Elle Fanning as Aurora, and Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Leslie Manville as the good fairies. New characters are being written, including Queen Ingrith, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Maleficent II picks up several years after the first movie ends – and we see with Aurora soon to become Queen and trying to form an alliance with Maleficent. A release date has not been announced.
A live action version of Pinocchio has been in talks for many years. While there is no cast, no filming date and no release date, it looks like Paul King is now attached as director with Jack Thorne rewriting the script originally penned by Pete Hedges and Chris Weitz.
This one always gets me super excited! In 2015 Disney reveled plans to make a live action movie based on Prince Charming, Cinderella’s main squeeze! Last fall it was announced that Stephen Chbosky would both write and direct. And while the story will focus on Charming – it will be told from the point of view of his brother. No other details are known at this time.
While no real details have been released, Disney is adamant that Jungle Book 2 is coming to the big screen. With a lot of their focus on the CGI The Lion King, it just makes sense that it could be a while before we see anything happening on this front.
Still in the development phases, with a script going through rewrites, a 101 Dalmations remake centered around Cruella, and with that title is said to have Emma Stone attached! Are you looking forward to this hitting the big screen as much as I am?!
Several Disney classics are getting a live action reboot and heading to Disney’s new online streaming service, including Lady and the Tramp and Sword and the Stone.
There is also talk of not one, but two, live action films inspired by the classic, Peter Pan. Tink, which would focus on our favorite Pixie has been in development for a while now. While Elizabeth Banks was once attached to it, now it looks like Reese Witherspoon is set to star. And it looks like David Lowery will be taking the reins and creating a live action adventure movie of Peter Pan – sounds, well, exciting, right?!
And two Disney Princess films are said to be getting live action remakes as well – The Little Mermaid and Snow White – although no actors are attached nor have filming date or premiere dates been set!
Whew! That’s a lot of upcoming Disney film magic to look forward to! Do you have one you’re looking forward to more than another?! Let us know what you can’t wait to see come to life on the big, or small, screen!
