Unvaccinated passengers barred from boarding Royal Caribbean Cruise

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line barred some unvaccinated passengers from boarding a cruise on Friday. The passengers insisted they were told they only needed a negative COVID test in order to board. Royal Caribbean tells another story.

Marilyn Sylver, one of the passengers that was denied boarding, says Royal Caribbean told them all they needed was a negative COVID test 72 hours in advance. She and the other passengers (more than half a dozen) were trying to board Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas in Seattle for a cruise to Alaska.

When Sylver and the other passengers tried to board she said they were denied boarding and that Royal Caribbean “…acted like we wasted our time and we knew better.”

A Royal Caribbean spokeswoman says the passengers should have known. Back in May, the cruise line released an update saying all Alaska-bound passengers would need to be vaccinated starting August 1st. The Royal Caribbean website also states that all guests (age 12 and up) departing from Seattle would need to be vaccinated.

Sylver and her cruise party were extremely upset. “The boat has taken off,” said Sylver. “Nobody has talked to us. Nobody has offered us transportation or seen that we had a place to stay. They just keep like ‘you’re at fault.’”

Most cruise lines are requiring at least a negative COVID-19 test in order for guests to sail but there are some that require passengers to be vaccinated. Passengers are usually aware of the cruise line’s requirements to sail before they head to the ship.

If you are planning on taking a cruise in these post-COVID closure times, make sure you know the cruise line’s COVID policies and requirements!
