Union Workers Reach Deal with Walt Disney World Amid Coronavirus Closures

Walt Disney World unions have reached an agreement with Disney concerning 43,000 workers being furloughed. The decision was announced Saturday, April 11th on Facebook Live.

Due to the closure of Walt Disney World because of COVID-19 concerns, workers have been uncertain about their futures with the company and have received tentative answers at best. Now, the Service Trades Council, a group of 6 unions, have more clear information for their members. Beginning on April 19th, workers will be furloughed. They will continue to receive health and education benefits with the company but will be eligible to file for unemployment immediately through the state of Florida. This comes as both a welcome resolution and a burdensome task, as the unemployment system has already seen thousands of claims filed since the outbreak began.

The good news is this: jobs, wage rates, seniority, and benefits are guaranteed for the duration of the furlough. Those who signed up for insurance will keep it for 12 months, or the duration of the furlough up to that point, even if workers are part-time. Less than 200 workers will be selected to do ”essential” tasks around the parks, and the jobs will be offered based on seniority. Anyone requiring COVID-19 testing who is insured will be tested free of charge.

To all the Cast Members who’ve made our visits magical, we wish you all the best and hope to see you back in Walt Disney World very soon!
