Awwww! Look at those sweet baby faces! That’s right two new Gervy’s Zebra Foals now can be seen at Animal Kingdom’s Gorilla Falls Expedition Trail. Born within the past month, Youka and Zalika, are carbon copies of their moms – down to their stripe patterns, which carry down to the next generation and in their behavior and demeanor.
Each foal has its own unique personality. Laylee’s foal, Youka, is curious and independent. While Zuri’s foal Zalika is a bit bashful. Similar to humans, zebras learn by watching. Both foals have been spotted watching their moms eat hay, which then that try to do. They also try to bathe in dust after they see their moms do it first. Each day is a new adventure as both foals learn and grow.
Zebra keepers,Collin Beatty and Lori Kurdziel, said both Laylee and Zuri are excellent moms. Zuri hovers more over her foal Zalika, sticking close and keeping a watchful eye on her. Laylee has always been very curious and outgoing, and it seems her foal Youka is as well.
Unfortunately, Gervy’s Zebras are the most endangered species of zebras. The births of there two new foals were a part of Animal Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to the Species Survival Plan (SSP) program, which helps ensure healthy, genetically diverse populations of animals for years to come.
