How to Make the Most of Your Time Standing In Line

Let’s face it, waiting in line can be a total bummer on vacation, especially when there is so much to see and do!  And with little ones, it can become challenging to keep them entertained in order to avoid a meltdown.  Here are some of my favorite ways to keep kids of all ages entertained and help pass the time before it is your turn to ride your favorite attraction!!

  1. The Alphabet Game- look for letters of the alphabet, in order, on objects around you.  With tons of people and even interactive queues, this is a great way to pass time!
  2. Bring Snacks- when visiting WDW with my almost three year old, each time I knew we’d be waiting in line I made sure to take a sippy cup along and put some snacks in my bag.  Kids (and adults!) get hungry, and being hungry can cause crankiness.  So, keep hunger at bay and consider ordering some snacks from our friends over at Garden Grocer to take into the parks.
  3. Plan What to Do Next- what better time to plan what you are going to ride next, than while waiting in line.  If you are in Disney, then be sure to use the My Disney Experience app to check wait times and even make some dining reservations.  If you are at Universal, then the Official Universal Orlando Resort app will become your friend!
  4. Talk to Those Around You- strike up a conversation with the family in front of, next to, or behind you!!  You never know what you might discover and you might even realize how small of a world it really is.
  5. Look for Hidden Mickeys– if you are in Disney, you never know when you will find one!  Steve Barrett has created books and an app to help you find these hidden gems throughout the resorts and parks.
  6. The Character Alphabet Game- see how many characters you can name from A-Z.  And don’t forget about those lesser known characters…they will help get you to the end!
  7. Name That Tune- whistle a song for people to guess.
  8. The Category Game- choose a category and take turns naming something in that category from A-Z (ex. Names: Anna, Brady, Chuck, etc.)
  9. I Spy and Simon Says- these two games are fun for kids of all ages and are great ways to pass the time.
  10. Play Charades- an oldie but goodie, this game is fun for the whole family.

Don’t let waiting in line dampen your vacation.  Use it as an opportunity to continue making memories with your family.
