While Star Wars: The Last Jedi was met with mixed fan reviews, it was the most profitable film of 2017 – and has the 9th highest gross box office numbers, worldwide, of all time!
With a $220M opening, The Last Jedi has the second biggest domestic opening weekend ever, falling behind The Force Awakens at $247.9M in 2015.
With a combined box office performance of $620M domestically and $712.3M overseas, bringing the grand total to $1,332.3M, The Last Jedi made an impressive showing. Even if it did bring in only 48% of the amount The Force Awakens did.
When Disney bought Lucasfilms in 2012 no one could have predicted that with only three films almost 40% of their initial investment would be made back. But with a combined box office haul of $4,456.6M, a good chuck of the $4 billion Bob Iger paid had made it’s way back to the company!
And with two more Star Wars films in the wings over the next two years, including this May’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, we’re sure that gap to $4 billion will decrease drastically!
