Taika Waititi‘s ‘Star Wars’ Movie to Begin Filming in the Scottish Highlands. Earlier this year it was announced that Academy Award Winning Director Taika Waititi would be developing his own Star Wars story for Lucasfilm after his massive success directing and starring in some episodes of Star Wars The Mandalorian for Disney+. The Thor: Ragnarok director has co-written the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, but plot details regarding the film have been kept deeply under wraps.

Thanks to an inside scope featured in the DailyRecord, we now know filming is set to begin in Scotland and a 3-day filming is scheduled for this December. The source shared, “It’s great that Star Wars have decided to use Scotland’s breathtaking scenery for some of their first production shots. The film is still a few years away thanks to the Covid crisis but it will be very exciting for fans to hear that the ball has started rolling on this highly anticipated movie,” they continued, “Filming will take place in the Highlands and will focus on the hills and surrounding areas. It will likely be a small crew and an assistant director heading to Scotland to film over three days. Star Wars is the latest in a long list of films to showcase Scotland and everything this beautiful country has to offer.”

In addition to Waititi and Wilson-Carnes project, Emmy®-nominated writer Leslye Headland (Russian Doll, Bachelorette) is currently developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series, which adds to a growing list of Star Wars stories for Disney’s streaming platform including The Mandalorian, now in post-production on Season Two, and two other previously announced series: one based on Cassian Andor’s life prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and another following the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope.

It is currently unknown when Taika’s new Star Wars story will premiere in theaters, pending the outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic. No casting decisions have been shared at the time of writing. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for updates and all things Star Wars!
