Taika Waititi shares update on his Star Wars Movie

While promoting Pixar’s Lightyear, Taika Waititi discussed his upcoming Star Wars movie and how it might be different from previous installments.

The Lucasfilm studio has been taking their time developing their feature film projects. However, they have been developing films with Patty Jenkins, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, and Taika Waititi. There haven’t been many updates on Waititi’s film and the director has been very vague about his project. Now, the director has come out with a brand new update that’s still very vague.

While speaking in an exclusive interview at Screen Rant, Waititi says he wants to make sure his project feels like an authentic Star Wars film.

That’s yet to be seen. I don’t know. I’m still writing. I’m still coming up with the ideas and storylining it and just wanted to make sure that it feels like a Star Wars film. Because, I could say, “Oh yeah, we’ll just write any old thing and set in space and then put Star Wars on the front.” But it wouldn’t be a Star Wars film without certain elements and a certain treatment, so I’ve just got to make sure that it stays within that wheelhouse.

In summary, Taika Waititi and Wilson-Cairns are still figuring out a few things about their script, making a potential late 2023 release date sound more than a bit ambitious. Lucasfilm has yet to even announce a title for the film or any castings, the latter of which is a process that could take months, especially for a project as massive as Star Wars.

However, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy insists that the movie will be ready for a 2023 release.
