Hollywood brought in more than $11.5 Billion as Superhero films topped 2018 box office accounting for 25.5% of total ticket sales. Analysts expect the final totals to be as high as $11.9 billion when the year comes to an end.
The movie theaters are alive and well with these top five films:
- Black Panther-$700,059,566
- Avengers: Infinity War– $678,815,482
- Incredibles 2– $608,581,744
- Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom- $416,769,345
- Deadpool 2- $318,491,426
It is safe to say Superhero films topped the 2018 Box office! In all, Hollywood released nine superhero films in 2018. Disney’s “Black Panther” landed the top spot earning more than $700 million, plus an additional $646.8 million internationally. These sales lead the move to be the third-highest-grossing movie in U.S. history! “Black Panther” also received a Golden Globe nomination and is expected to be nominated for an Academy Award in the new year.
Disney produced four of the nine superhero films this year which earned them more than $2.2 billion in ticket sales. Analysts suggest audiences want to see the big-budget, action-packed films on the big screen to get the full effect and will continue to pay to do so. This notion sets Disney up for another big year in 2019.
Disney is slated to release two more Marvel films. In March, “Captain Marvel” will be returning to the big screen. The return comes a year after the cliffhanger ending to “Avengers: Infinity War”. The upcoming “Captain Marvel” film will take place in the 90’s to tell the origin story of Carol Danvers, who becomes Captain Marvel.
In May, Disney will release “Avengers: Endgame” which will give resolutions to the events of “Infinity War”. The “Endgame” could serve as the last film for several of the characters. Seeing as “Avengers: Infinity War” earned $678 million, plus an additional$1.37 billion internationally, it is a good bet the sequels could bring back a solid fan base. Disney will also be releasing “Star Wars: Episode IX”, the live-action “Dumbo”, “Aladdin”, “The Lion King” movies, as well as the “Frozen 2” and “Toy Story (4)” animations.
Other films slated to grace the big screen in 2019 include DC’s “Shazam”, “Joker”, and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far from Home”. These films set up Disney to potentially beat its own record for next year and possibly allowing Superhero films to top the box office again.
