Star Wars Fans Can Now Freeze Themselves in Carbonite
If you’ve ever wanted to know what Han Solo felt like right before being handed over to Boba Fett, Lucasfilm is about to give you your chance.
Announced during “The Making of Star Wars: The Experience” panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, a brand-new Carbon Freeze Capture installation will make its official public debut as an exclusive preview at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim!
Step Into Cloud City
Inspired by the iconic carbon-freezing chamber sequence in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, this interactive offering recreates the moody, industrial aesthetic of Cloud City where Darth Vader famously tested the freezing process on Han Solo.
When fans step up to the display, they will come face-to-face with a full-scale replica of Han Solo encased in a slab of carbonite. Surrounding the replica, two interactive capture stations will give attendees the opportunity to see their own likenesses preserved in carbonite alongside the galaxy’s favorite smuggler.
While Lucasfilm has yet to reveal the exact technology behind the capture process or how fans will receive their frozen images, it promises to be one of the top photo ops on the D23 floor!
A First Look at “Star Wars: The Experience”
This D23 preview is just a teaser for something much bigger. The installation is part of Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy, a massive 18,000-square-foot traveling museum exhibition celebrating 50 years of the franchise.
When the full exhibition launches at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in February 2027 before kicking off a five-year North American tour, it will feature:
- Over 70 Authentic Artifacts: Screen-used props and costumes, including Darth Vader’s armor, Darth Maul’s lightsaber hilt, Grogu, R2-D2, C-3PO, and a full-size speeder bike.
- Immersive Environments: A walkthrough of Queen Amidala’s Naboo throne room featuring her royal gowns and projected visuals.
- “Wireframe Worlds”: A gallery exploring early spacecraft design around a giant wireframe TIE fighter.
- RFID-Powered Choice System: “The Force That Connects Us” technology will personalize each guest’s journey and finale based on their Force allegiance and decisions throughout the exhibit.
- 50 Years of Toys: A showcase of over 100 vintage action figures and rare design prototypes.
Catch It at D23 First!
Convention-goers can test out the Carbon Freeze Capture setup at the Anaheim Convention Center during D23, running from August 14 through August 16, 2026.
