The ultimate Disney fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, will awaken on stunning Blu-ray Diamond Edition in October 2014. This wondrous tale of Princess Aurora is a true favorite of Disney Princess lovers every where, not only because of it’s beautiful music and story, but also because it is one of the final fairy tales that Walt Disney himself worked on. Featuring the voice talents of renowned opera singer Mary Costa (as Sleeping Beauty) and Eleanor Audley (as the evil fairy, Maleficent), the film’s vibrant look was created by a team that included Milt Kahl and Ollie Johnston, John Lounsbery, Frank Thomas and Marc Davis (of Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men). It is a feast for the ears as well – with an Academy Award® nominated score adapted from the music of Peter Tchaikovsky.
Walt’s use of the multiplane camera for filming Sleeping Beauty was truly cutting edge technology for it’s time – and just one reason why Sleeping Beauty took several years to create. As opposed to having the backgrounds be designed to match the characters, Sleeping Beauty’s characters were designed to match the backgrounds. (It is the only Disney movie that has square trees!) The complex and detailed background paintings usually took seven to ten times longer to paint than average. It was worth the wait – and all that work – because the scenery and artistry of this film, in my opinion, is unmatched to this day.
As a fully grown princess fan – too old for the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique – this movie tops my list as an all-time favorite. I could not be more excited to that we will be able to appreciate this animated classic’s dazzling colors, spectacular action, and Academy Award®-nominated orchestration (for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture) in a way that is bolder and brighter than ever. The fully restored version will make it easier to spot those cookies that the fairies eat (with tea!) that are shaped like Mickey Mouse’s head and ears! Disney fans every where are anticipating that Sleeping Beauty will charm us like never before.
