Should upcoming Marvel Series be rated TV-MA on Disney+?

Disney+ began streaming its first-ever R-rated content over the weekend. A surprising trio of Marvel superhero films were added to the streaming service. Now subscribers can watch Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan at home. The recent additions have some wondering if future Marvel projects should be rated TV-MA.

For starters, all three films, produced by 20th Century Fox, are based on characters from Marvel Comics, but they wade into much more graphic territory than most Disney-produced Marvel films.

According to Deadline, Disney+ began paving the way for more mature content back in March by updating its existing Parental Controls in the USA. The updated parental controls allowed Disney+ to add several Marvel series to its library, including the TV-MA-rated “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage,” among other Marvel series that were previously on Netflix.

Ryan Reynolds shared the announcement of the R-Rated films coming to Disney+ in a hilarious fashion.

“We’re supposed to announce Logan and Deadpool will soon be the first R-rated movies on Disney+. But we all know some Disney movies should already be rated R for irreversible trauma.”

He joked about the parental rating of classic Disney films with the following images.

San Diego Comic Con was held shortly after the Disney+ announcement. The Marvel animation panel confirmed a “Marvel Zombies” series is currently in production and will be rated TV-MA. It’s fitting for the theme of the project, but it is surprising to see such a rating for a Disney+ show.

Now Marvel fans are questioning if we will see a TV-MA rating for the upcoming ”Blade” movie reboot and “Daredevil: Born Again” Disney+ series.

Both projects involve characters who feature in more adult-oriented comic book adventures. Even though Disney is always going to make family-friendly content a priority, it will be interesting to see if future Marvel projects will be more flexible on mature themes and stories. The recent changes certainly suggest it’s likely both Blade and Daredevil will receive an adult rating.
