Netflix scored a major win in the current battle they are in with ABC/Disney ever since Disney announced they would be pulling their programming from Netflix. Netflix and Rhimes’ Shondaland, creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, have announced a multi-year deal for Rhimes to produce Netflix exclusive content.
Rhimes’s current hit shows on ABC will not be affected by this change. Current shows and new shows already in production will continue to air on ABC. Netflix already has the rights to stream back episodes of Grey’s and Scandal.
Channing Dungey, president of entertainment for ABC, confirmed that Shondaland’s current shows airing on the network will not be going anywhere:
“I’m proud to have given a home to what have become some of the most celebrated and talked about shows on television. With the launch of a new season upon us, fans can rest assured that TGIT remains intact and will be as buzzed about as ever.”
Rhimes released a statement about her future with Netflix:
“Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company. Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for – the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers and with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation. The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities.”
Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix, released the following statement:
“I’ve gotten to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart – she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience.”
Disney still has not issued a time frame as to when their new streaming service will air. However, rumors are pointing to a 2019 premiere.
