31 Sloths Dead Ahead of Sloth World Orlando Opening Raises Major Questions

A new investigation is casting a shadow over a highly anticipated Central Florida attraction as Sloth World Orlando prepares to debut its so-called “slotharium” on International Drive. According to a report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 31 sloths died while under the company’s care between December 2024 and February 2025, raising serious concerns just months before the attraction is expected to welcome guests.

The timeline paints a troubling picture. The animals were shipped in two groups, one arriving from Guyana in December 2024 and another from Peru in early 2025. Of the first group, 21 sloths reportedly died due to what investigators described as “cold stun,” a condition that occurs when temperatures drop too low for the animals to regulate their body heat. The second shipment fared no better, with two sloths arriving deceased and the remaining eight described as severely malnourished before eventually passing away. Investigators noted the warehouse used to house the animals may not have been fully prepared at the time, including reports that heating systems failed during colder temperatures.

Despite the high number of deaths, the investigation concluded without fines, citations, or permit revocations. Officials stated there was no evidence of intentional misconduct or unwillingness to follow wildlife regulations. However, inspectors did issue a verbal warning related to improper cage sizes and record-keeping during a later inspection in August 2025.

Sloth World Orlando has pushed back on the findings, claiming the deaths were caused by a virus rather than environmental conditions. The company says it worked with veterinarians and state agencies to identify and address the issue, and maintains that it has invested heavily in animal care and habitat development. Meanwhile, critics and wildlife experts have pointed out that sloths are extremely sensitive to temperature changes, requiring warm, stable environments to survive.

The attraction, which markets itself as a research-informed habitat where guests can observe sloths in a controlled environment, has already missed its originally planned opening date. As questions continue to swirl, this situation is likely to remain under scrutiny as Sloth World Orlando moves closer to opening its doors.
