Sam Raimi Confirmed to Direct Marvel Studios ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. Marvel Fans have been curious as to whom would replace Scott Derrickson as director for the highly anticipated Doctor Strange sequel. We now have an official answer!
Fan favorite director, Sam Raimi has confirmed he will direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Raimi spoke with journalists in an over the phone interview and was asked about the name drop of Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 2 (2004) to which he is pleasantly surprised at the irony.
“I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters,” Raimi shared. “He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”
Earlier this year, Scott Derrickson announced he would no longer be directing the Doctor Strange sequel, but was glad to support the possibility of Raimi stepping into the role as director for the film. Derrickson shared in a tweet, “I’ve worked with Sam Raimi. One of the nicest people I’ve known in the film business, and as a director, a true living legend. What a great choice to take over Doctor Strange.”
Marvel has yet to confirm the director switch, but likely will announce the change soon. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for all things Marvel!
