Review for Marvel Studios’ ‘What If…?’ Coming to Disney+. SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for the upcoming animated Marvel Series, ‘What If…?’ If you do not wish to have aspects of the series or featured stories spoiled for you we recommend you stop reading past this point. Thank you!

With that spoiler alert aside, I wanted to share that normally we refrain from spoilers in our reviews, but the nature of the series makes it difficult to accurately share our opinion of the series without spoiling certain details. That being said, let’s dive into our review of Marvel Studios’ ‘What If…?’

What If…? is set to premiere exclsuively on Disney+ Wednesday, August 11th and explores alternate timelines in the multiverse that show what would happen if major moments from the MCU films occurred differently. Marvel newcomer Jeffrey Wright voices The Watcher in his MCU debut and will be joined by over 50 Marvel actors and actresses from various projects and franchises who will be reprising their roles for the series. A basic overview of our review is:

We loved exploring these new and exciting stories with the variants featured throughout the series. We laughed, we cried, we watched in shock asking “Did that really just happen? Was that really so-and-so?” and saying “I can’t wait for more!” by the end. To sum it up, we LOVED it and are very excited for more seasons to come. ou are a huge MCU fan you are going to appreciate the exploration of these stories and how they diverge from “the sacred timeline,” but we do expect casual viewers and fans to be slightly confused if they are not familiar with the original characters and their stories. Though the series is considered “canon” to the MCU, please remember the show acts as a vessel to explore alternate timelines created by the nexus event at the end of the “Loki” series. Marvel’s What If…? will feel faster paced/rushed to some due to the nature of the series, and this makes total sense otherwise we would have to have endless movies and shows just to catch to current events set to be revealed in Phase 4 of the MCU.

For a more indepth look at the first three episodes (with minimal spoilers, I promise) keep reading below:

The series will premiere with the first confirmed returning character, Peggy Carter as Captain Carter, voiced by Hayley Atwell. The episode is filled with nostaglic moments and emotional scenes between characters we love from Captain America: The First Avenger, but with a twist: it is Peggy Carter who is injected with the Super Soldier Serum and not Steve Rogers. Don’t worry though! Steve still plays a pivotal role in the adventure, along with Howard Stark, Bucky Barnes, and the rest of the Howling Cammandos. Peggy will return in future episodes/seasons as Captain Carter and will be a cornerstone in the series moving forward, making her the perfect story to lead the new show.

Within the first few episodes we will also see alternative stories of T’Challa as Star-Lord and leading a Ravenger Group with several familiar faces from the Guardians franchise as well as a surprising addition of a formidable villain from the Infinity Saga (shhh, no spoilers!) The episode is fun, action packed, and filled with adventure. We also loved that the story keeps familiar themes from the franchise while also exploring more of T’Challa’s character and leadership abilities. Admittedly, it is also bitter sweet to hear Chadwick Boseman’s voice again in the series, and we do know he will remain the voice of T’Challa for 4 episodes of the series. I would be lying if I said I didn’t need to pause the episode and wipe away a few tears before returning to the episode because of the double meaning behind a conversation held between T’Challa and Yondu. I don’t mean to be cryptic, but I can’t wait to see what you think of the scene in question and would hate to spoil the beauty of that special moment for you.

One of the first few episodes will also feature a mysterious foe who’s sole goal is to completely derail The Avengers Initiative before they can ever become a team. We were genuinly thrown by this episode in the best ways and really enjoyed the story. Needless to say, this episodes will leave your jaw dropped and in a mild state of shock. This episode also leads us to believe and accept that nearly anything and everything can happen in this series and we can’t wait to see where it goes from here!

Basically, Marvel fans should take these stories with a grain of salt and understand that they do not change anything that has happened in the sacred timeline so far. Likely, we will only see these versions in the animated series, but as we all know in comicbook stories, anything is possible.
