Marvel Studios Producer Confirms ‘What If…?’ Animated Series Will Get a Second Season. We had a blast sitting in on the ‘What If…?’ press conference and learned some exciting and new details regarding the series! Disney had already confirmed over 50 actors and actresses would be returning to voice their roles from the MCU, and leading the pack is Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter / Captian Carter in the series premiere episode titled: “Captain Carter.”

Marvel Producer Brad Winderbaum shared some exciting news regarding Captain Carter’s continuation in the series, and let slip that Atwell will return as Captain Carter in future episodes and seasons for the series! Winderbaum shares with the press:
“We realized, I think, early on in development as we were starting to get AC [Bradley’s] scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important,” Winderbaum said. “Not more important than the rest, but had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter.”
Elaborating, “And we realized as we started developing the second season that Captain Carter was going to be the character who we would revisit in every season and continue that adventure. Obviously, we’re telling a story on a giant multiversal canvas so you never really know who’s going to pop up where and when. It’s very much an anthology, but there’s always opportunity for fun connections to be made.”

Marvel newcomer Jeffrey Wright will lead the series as The Watcher, who acts as a narrator in the series, and shared that diving into a character whose existence is reliant on these stories and characters has been a fun journey as an actor. Jeffrey’s insight on the character struck us as very honest and open, leading to even more excitement for the series!
Wright shared during the press junket, “I think [The Watcher], in some ways [is] kind of defined by them. It’s his life’s passion to observe and connect with them, with their heroism and their flaws. Without them, he’s nothing, in some regard. So, he adores them, is compelled by them, and in a way that gives him purpose, that gives his life meaning. As I think about these characters and what they’ve come to represent we [the audience] watch them, we [as the audience] are like The Watcher, and in some ways, I think that the passion behind the fans’ connections to these characters is this level of trust.”
Jeffrey continued, “This level of understanding and hope that is imbued in them in a way that [audiences] may have not found outside of this mythology. Particularly now, in this kind of upturned world [we live in] where trust is difficult to hold on to and to place in an individual. We can always place our trust in these characters. The deepness of that connection for fans is a powerful one, and also for The Watcher. These characters are a big deal for him.”
