I remember the very first time I ever saw “The Princess Diaries”. It was for my birthday and I had all of my closest girlfriends with me. My mom took us to the AMC at Downtown Disney out here by Disneyland. We all wore tiaras while we watched the film.
I loved the film then, and watching it on Blu-Ray reminded me how much I enjoy the film. I think I’ve always enjoyed it because Mia is such a relatable character – she’s dorky and quirky and doesn’t quite know how to handle herself. She’s a regular girl that finds out she’s not as ordinary as she thought.
I knew I already loved the first film, but I also got to see the second film, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”, for the very first time. The first one is the better of the two, but it’s still a cute, fun film that’s great for younger aspiring princesses.
The films themselves looked fantastic on Blu-Ray. The landscapes of Genovia in the second film stood out in the Blu-Ray format. (The gardens especially looked gorgeous!) I also liked the fact that both films were on one Blu-Ray disc; it was a lot more convenient and I didn’t have to get up to switch discs. (Sure, it sounds lazy, but it made the viewing experience that much better.) There are some silly bloopers and outtakes on the Blu-Ray, but the majority of all of the special features are on the DVD copies.
The first DVD disc has the first “Princess Diaries” film as well as outtakes, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette, music videos for songs featured in the film, and commentary by Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway. The second DVD is the second movie along with bloopers, deleted scenes, the music video for “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson, commentary by Andrews and film director Garry Marshall, and a personality quiz to find your inner princess. The deleted scenes are probably my favorite features because it gives an idea of what the films could have been, and sometimes you can see why the scenes were deleted. (But I won’t deny that the personality quiz is a fun, silly thing to do!)
I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to review these films. It brought back so many memories! But I’m still in denial that the first film came out ten years ago.
The special combo pack is exclusively available at Target (one of my favorite stores ever!). Be sure to pick up your copy today to watch with your own little princess!
Jessica is currently in denial that she’s not a princess after watching these two films. At the moment, she’s waiting for Cars Land and Buena Vista Street at California Adventure to open so she can take ridiculous amounts of photos for you all.
