The Pirates League at WDW: It's A Pirate's Life for Me!

Ahoy Mateys! Have you ever wondered if the pirate life is the life for you? Well here’s your chance to find out! While we were planning for a recent trip to Walt Disney World, my daughter decided that she wanted to join Captain Jack’s crew and live the pirate life. The journey into a pirate’s life began in Adventureland at the Pirates League which is located next to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. From the moment we checked in with the Cast Member it was an adventure full of Disney magic! Join me on the journey to become a member of Captain Jack’s crew of adventurous pirates sailing the high seas.

The first step in becoming a pirate is receiving your pirate name; which is done in grand pirate fashion. Under the wise instruction of a Pirate Master, my daughter turned an official pirate treasure chest containing two very special dice  which when calculated together with your birthday, determine your official pirate name. At this point, her landlubber name removed, she became Elizabeth Bridgewater, pirate trainee and her name was recorded as an official member of Captain Jack’s crew in the beautiful Log Book. She also received a beautiful certificate proclaiming her new pirate name to take home.

In order for you to become a swashbuckling pirate you choose one of the four different packages available, each with its own features and options.

Jake and the Never Land Pirates:One that is sure to be popular among the Disney junior fans is the opportunity to be transformed into Jake from Jake and the Never Land Pirates fame.

 This package includes:

  • Jake and the Never Land Pirate bandana with faux hair
  • Jake facial effect
  • Sword and sheath
  • Pirates League bag
  • Pirate sash
  • Pirate medallion necklace

First Mate: The First Mate package has 5 different facial effects available for your pirate to choose from:

  • Cursed Pirate
  • Captain Hook
  • Smoky-Eyed Jack
  • Black-Eyed Jack
  • Multi-Eyed Jack

    The First Mate package includes:

  • Reversible bandana
  • Pirate earring and eye patch
  • Sword and sheath
  • Temporary tattoo and pirate teeth
  • Pirate League bag
  • Pirate sash
  • Pirate medallion necklace

My pirate princess chose the Empress package which includes:

  • Lip gloss and nail polish
  • Reversible bandana
  • Pirate earring and eye patch
  • Sword and Sheath
  • Temporary tattoo and face gem
  • Pirate medallion necklace
  • Pirate Sash
  • Pirate League bag

Mermaid package:

  • Luminous mermaid makeup and makeup palette
  • hairstyle and color-changing hair clip
  • Distinctive color changing mermaid necklace
  • Nail polish
  • Mermaid sash
  • Pirates League bag

After my pirate princess made her selection, the magical transformation truly began. Her beautiful makeup and accessories were applied as she learned about the new life ahead of her  from the experienced pirates. My family and I have been lucky enough to experience many different activities at Disney and I can say without question-the Cast Members in the Pirate League were the most amazing people we have ever come across at Disney World. Their excitement and dedication to their characters made this one of our best memories of Disney.

The pirate transformation complete, booty bag in hand, and pirate oath recited, my daughter was enthusiastically welcomed into the Pirates League as a crew member. She was then led into the ultra-secret treasure room where only pirates (and their parents) are allowed to dare enter. There she was shown beautiful pirate treasure and the Disney Photo Pass photographer took pictures that we were able to purchase later. There aren’t however any Photo Pass photographers present during the makeover so be sure to have your own camera ready for pictures.

Also included in the Pirates League experience is participation in the Adventureland Pirate Parade. This is held every afternoon to celebrate all of the new pirate recruits. Even my normally very shy pirate princess was thrilled to join her new mateys in singing a sea shanty around Adventureland. This was held at 4:00 when we participated and is held weather permitting so you may need to check with a Cast Member if the weather looks iffy. Photo Pass photographers were also present for great pictures during the parade so have your Photo Pass card ready!

Tips for a swashbuckling pirate adventure:

  • Theme park admission is required.
  • Costumes and accessories are available for purchase; however you are welcome to bring your own.
  • Guests must be at least 3 years old.
  • Open 7 days a week from 9:00 to 4:00 p.m. The last reservations will be taken at 3:30 p.m. It’s suggested that you arrive about 15 minutes before your reservation.
  • Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made up to 180 days prior to your arrival. This is especially important during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.
  • A valid credit card number is required when you book and will be charged a $10.00 cancellation fee for a new show or if you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment.
  • The experience took about one hour to complete.
  • If you have purchased Disney’s Photo Pass +, you will receive your photo package for no additional charge when you present your Photo Pass + card.
  • The makeup can be a little tricky to remove; we found eye makeup remover worked the best!

While most people may think of this as an experience for just kids, it is amazingly fun for adults too! So, go ahead and become pirates together, it is an experience you won’t soon forget. If you do become a scurvy pirate  be sure and watch Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Tutorial which is held in Adventureland at various times throughout the day. You just might get a chance to polish your pirate skills with the Captain himself!

Heather L. is an avid Disney fan and has been visiting the parks since she was 4. She is a homeschooling mom and is happiest with a Mickey balloon in one hand and a Mickey bar in the other.

  1. This was a really good explanation. I see this advertised all the time but I didn’t really know what it was until now. This would be a great gift for nieces or nephews.

  2. I am still thinking about this. Going to Pirate night on the cruise really makes being a pirate seem so exciting. Anyone wanna go to pirate league with me and then ride pirates 20 times lol

  3. We usually do Bibitty bobitty bootique at WDW and we prefer to do it at the park instead of downtown. BUT this time we wanted something different and new. After being on the cruise we now are LOVING all things pirates. Since a pirates life is for me, we are now ALL going to the pirates league this visit!
